In this tutorial, we will travel back to the basic technique of Stamp Tool (S) and Brush Tool (B) to create dynamic and effective particles on the red cloth as shown below. This technique can be used on any objects that you wish to add more effects on.

Along the way, we will go through the use of blending options, path tool, image adjustment tools, warp tools and other selection techniques.

You will need a nice model picture and a vector graphic for this tutorial.

Step 1

Open the dancing girl image and duplicate it. Next, mask out the girl using Path Tool (P).

When you are done, move the selection to a new document of 800x600 pix.

Step 2
Now for the background, fill in a dark gray color using the Paint Bucket Tool (G). After that, duplicate the background layer as �Background Copy�.


Step 3
Make sure you work on the Background Copy layer. Go to Filter > Noise > Add Noise, and follow the steps as shown in the picture here:


Step 4
Next, go to Images > Adjustments > Brightness/Contrast and follow the settings as below.


This step is necessary to reduce the amount of noise as shown in the following image.


Set the blending mode to Overlay when you have reached this step.


Step 5
Now, create a new layer > Clouds.

Make sure the background and foreground is black and white before you go to Filter > Render > Clouds.

You'll see :

Now, change the blending mode to Multiply.

Step 6
Create another Clouds layer > Clouds2, but remain the blending mode as normal.

Step 7
Work on Clouds2 layer. Use the Lasso Tool (L) to make a selection around the dancing girl and set the Feather Radius at 35 pixels.


Step 8
Click on the Add Layer Mask.

Step 9
Go to Blending Options and follow the settings below:

You should get something like this:


Next, use the Brush Tool to remove unwanted effects surrounding the girl so only important areas (such as the ends of the red cloth) will stand out. This will be helpful in creating the effects we are going to achieve later in this tutorial.


Step 10
Now for the red cloth, make sure you work on the dancing girl layer. Select the edge of the red cloth and the duplicate a new layer for it > Red Cloth.

Step 11
Transform the red cloth using Warp Tool and make the cloth bigger.

Step 12
For the effects, go to New Brush Preset and choose Special Effects Brushes > Petal Crystals > hardness 100 (maximum). Then create a Layer Mask for the red cloth layer.


Step 13
Start brushing the red cloth until it creates a 'tearing' effect (on Red Cloth Layer).

And do the same for Layer 1. When you are done, merge the layers.




Next, use the Stamp Tool (S) to create more cloth particles around the main red cloth. Refer to the example below:

Repeat Step 11 � 13 for the bottom part of the cloth.






You would get:


Step 15
Now its the time to enhance the background and to create a more rythmic atmosphere to match the dancing girl.

Open a vector image,

and paste it to the bottom of the dancing girl layer.


Step 16
Change the �bg� layer blending mode to Pin Light. Then transform it to make the rays as if sparkling from the back of the dancing girl.


Step 17
Next, go to blending options, and follow the steps below. This is to make the particles more fiery and to match the red cloth.


Step 18
Make the necessary color correction on the rays (bg layer) by adjusting the Curves setting.

You will then get:

As a final step to enhance the overall image, select the bottom area of the image and set Feather value: 100px. Last but not least, go to Adjustments Layer to improve its Hue & Saturations for a better output.
